We’ll be giving them nothing but respect- Gough

Ballina Town manager Alan Gough always had a difficult task this season, taking over from Brendan Kenny who had just taken the side to back to back Super League titles. But Gough has managed to steer his side, which is in a transition period, to second place in the table - within striking distance of Castlebar Celtic, with half of the season left. Last weekend Gough faced a tough task in bringing his side to Swinford, the team he guided to safety last season in a year when four teams were relegated.

McGrath to run the line in FAI Cup final

Mayo League referee Damien McGrath’s upwards trajectory in the game will continue at pace on Sunday. The north Mayo whistle blower will be first assistant referee in Sunday’s Ford FAI Cup final between League of Ireland champions Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. McGrath’s stock in the game has been rising over the past number of years and he was rewarded earlier in the autumn when he was appointed as first assistant referee in a UEFA Champions League group game. On Sunday he will once again be first assistant referee with Thomas Connolly the man in the middle.

All change ahead of next season

As was reported last week, it is all change in the Mayo League next season thanks to the restructuring of the five divisions into six divisions of eight teams each. The final shake up of the divisions was sorted out last weekend with play off games in the old Premier Division and Division One. In the Premier Division play off Clew Bay United saw off Bangor Hibs 4-1 in Manulla, while in the Division One play off Kiltimagh/Knock United beat Castlebar Celtic B 2-1 in Swinford.

Newly structured format announced

The newly trimmed and slimed down league set up for the 2011 soccer season in Mayo was announced during the week. With the size of most of the league divisions being reduced to eight teams, there will now be six divisions of Mayo soccer as opposed to five last season. The new divisions run from top down now as follows; Super League, Premier A, Premier B, League One, League Two, and League Three. The top four divisions all have eight sides in each division, with the bottom two having seven sides. The Mayo league says this could change if a a new club applies for membership of the league, additional teams being entered (B or C, teams), or clubs withdrawing or failing to meet the criteria required for their division.
